In the 19th episode of ABC's show Black-ish, Chris Brown was cast to play the role of young hip hop star "Rich Youngsta" with whom advertising executive Dre (Anthony Anderson) was trying to launch a champagne campaign with.
Chris Brown's character is portrayed as a cool young music star that everyone wants on their team. Critics and fans alike are confused by the casting pick, stating that it comes as a slap in the face to have someone like Chris Brown (who's had his fair share of trouble), play a role that is meant to prove wrong the stereotypes placed on black males and entertainers.
I on the other hand think that casting Chris Brown was genius and here is why. 1.) It perfectly displayed how he and other artists are used and seen in the industry today. We can't deny the fact that companies often exploit talent and their lives for profit (as depicted in the episode). This episode makes a point of how even in black culture whiteness is still glorified. Even though Brown aka Rich Youngsta dressed and acted like a black man his actions didn't show that he respected his own people or the culture. This all says more about the business than the artist and for that I think Black-ish hit the nail right on the head. 2.) What better way to show controversy than to involve controversy itself? Chris Brown is the man for that and this was the entire purpose of the episode. Black-ish doesn't do anything for the comfort of an audience, they do things that will stir up emotion, make you think and truly look at things that are going on. Let's face it, the episode would've been a flop without him. You can't expect any other artist to have filled these shoes. 3.) If other celebrities get a pass for their wrong behavior then doesn't Chris deserve one too? I'm not excusing it but I will say that the way some celebs are seen compared to their black counterparts having done the same crimes or wrongs is disproportionately unfair. So until we can correct that, I don't think anyone can point a finger at him. Watch the clip below to check out the episode.
