Our hearts have been heavy since news first broke that youth have been going missing in Washington, D.C. This terrible chain of events has left many of us wondering what is being done about finding them.
The Associated Press reports that black congress members have reached out to both the justice department and the FBI for their help in investigating the D.C. abductions.
Congressional Black Caucus chairman Cedric Richmond, D-La., and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton have addressed a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director James Comey to “devote the resources necessary to determine whether these developments are an anomaly or whether they are indicative of an underlying trend that must be addressed.”
Just to catch you up, there have been 501 cases logged cases of missing juveniles just three months in to 2017. A majority of those missing persons are reportedly Black or Latino. AP reports that Only 22 of those cases remain unsolved.
“Ten children of color went missing in our nation’s capital in a period of two weeks and at first garnered very little media attention. That’s deeply disturbing,” Richmond said in the letter. “Whether these recent disappearances are an anomaly or signals of underlying trends, it is essential that the Department of Justice and the FBI use all of the tools at their disposal to help local officials investigate these events, and return these children to their parents as soon as possible.
