Several counties in Texas are in debt due to their current inability to fill up their jails. This issue has led to a modern day "witch hunt" of sorts and immigrants are the target. Welcome to the world of the Prison Industrial Complex! Stemming from President Trump's recent crackdown on illegal immigrants, these local jails think that they have found a solution to their problems.
Since the 1990's, the construction of prisons has steadily increased even though crime rates have decreased in the southwest. Another reason why these jails have a hard time filling beds is because of new forms of sentencing/corrections that replace having to serve jail time. Privatized prisons are stepping in offering to buy off these jails but the jails are refusing in the name of job security and pride. So locking up illegal immigrants or any immigrant they feel may be violating the law has become their get rich quick scheme.
This not only has raised red flags for me but to judges in the area as well. They are now a little more leery when cases involving immigrants come their way since the highest duty of the law is to protect the rights and well-being of all people and this new effort could potentially violate that. Reform is needed! Far too often the intent of our beloved criminal justice system is disputed. So are we really working to put away the bad guys or are we only concerned about putting money in our pockets? I guess when something's broken in America you break it even more.
