Shaniqua Stephens, mother of 13 year old Malachi Hemphill, was downstairs in their Forest Park, Georgia home when she heard the loud gunshot that would end her son's life. Once upstairs she found that her little boy had accidentally shot himself playing with a gun live on instagram. She also does not know where or how he got the gun. According to the Huffington Post, Stephens had this to say about her son's death:
“He was my only son. He was only just 13. Just the thought of me seeing him on the floor will never leave my brain.”
NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal could not bear standing by after witnessing the young mother's pain, he wanted to help. To do so, he has offered to cover the entire funeral service for Hemphill's family. Shaq stated that no mother should have to endure this and that he wanted to do whatever he could for them at such a tough time.
In addition, Forest Park Police released a message to the public (11alive.com):
This is a horrific event for parents, children and the police to deal with. We are asking parents to speak with their children about:
