New legislation being proposed is making it so that some people are being removed from organ transplant waitlists for their usage of medical marijuana. Now it does vary by state, however, I can name over five that are currently working to make this law (California, Washington, Illinois, Arizona, Delaware and New Hampshire). According to certain medical studies, the health risks associated with the use of medical marijuana are so great that an organ transplant would do more harm than good. A fungal infection called Aspergillosis can occur with usage that could ultimately lead to organ failure and/or death and it is very hard to fight off. Medical marijuana was not the first thing in the country to disqualify a person from receiving organ transplants, as the HIV epidemic in the 90's spurred this type of response as well. I can only imagine how defeated the population of citizens that actually need medical marijuana to function normally feel having to make one sacrifice after another. Politics as usual.
