Auntie Maxine, as millennials have dubbed her, is going to be Glamour Magazine's 2017 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. For years the award has been given to women in politics, entertainment and philanthropy for outstanding works and now the Californian congresswoman is getting the honor she deserves.
Maxine Waters has been a strong voice to those in need since 1991 and continues to firmly express her intentions directly in congress today. She recently gained popularity with younger activists during the House Financial Services Committee hearing when she hit Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin with "reclaiming my time" over his failure to answer why there was no response to a letter she wrote him about President Donald Trump's ties with Russia.
Waters hopes to continue to ride this new wave of popularity with younger citizens and build up the next great generation of politicians. She said:
"I want young people to know that not only should they speak up for themselves, but sometimes they have to make demands. I want young people to feel comfortable in their own skin, to like themselves, and to be able to present themselves—whenever and wherever they need to."
